Regarding "Post office to be renamed for mailman" [News, May 25], during my 18 years as principal of the Waverly Park School in East Rockaway, our school was fortunate to have John J. Cook as our mailman. His warm smile and cheery greeting always brightened our day.

He truly appeared to enjoy his 60-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. We saw this in his friendly manner and positive disposition. His quick walk and demeanor impressed all of us. When he left our school after his daily mail delivery, we all had smiles.

John J. Cook died in 2006. I know he would be humbled by this honor, but also pleased to know his career was valued and acknowledged.
