Letter: Require officials to balance the budget
Newsday’s editorial board writes, “For all the hand-wringing about Nassau deficits, the problems are still more about politicians worried about the next election than solving a fiscal dilemma” [“Nassau budget grows ever worse,” Editorial, Nov. 21].
I would like to believe that budget management problems could be best addressed by returning to basic common sense.
For Nassau County, our politicians should be legally excluded from seeking re-election if the budget is not brought under control in at least one year within their respective elected terms. No person should be permitted to serve in an elected position of county government for more than one term in which there is not at least one year with a balanced budget.
