Letter: Store staff should be home on holiday

It’s disingenuous of J.C. Penney spokeswoman Kate Coultas to say that the stores open on Thanksgiving will be staffed by volunteers to the extent possible [“More retailers open to Thanksgiving closings,” Business, Nov. 11].
Until my recent retirement, I worked in a different retail store that stayed open on Thanksgiving. While it’s true that we were given notice looking for volunteers to work, if enough didn’t volunteer, mandatory assignments were made.
Trust me, the store isn’t going to close if enough people don’t volunteer. Most sales associates would rather be home with their families.
One year, a customer said to me that her husband was ready to kill her because she left 30 people at her home while she ran out shopping. Her husband had the right idea. She should have been home with her guests.
