I applaud Legis. Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and the Suffolk County Police Department for their sensible approach to gun control ["Suffolk gun restriction would help save lives," Editorial, March 1].
They have finally attacked a major part of the problem by restricting the ownership of a firearm by a mentally disturbed person. Rather than punishing the law-abiding citizen and gun owner, they have exercised common sense.
Now we must find a way to prevent the criminals from obtaining weapons. I am a retired New York City Police Department detective, and I have faced many armed felons and people who are mentally ill. Never have I been confronted with a gun by a lawful gun owner.
We should enforce the laws we have and imprison the violators.
