Letter: Ticket amnesty wasn’t ‘successful’

The headline “Ticket amnesty brings in $386G” [News, Aug. 3] should have gone on to read, “for a net loss of $2,014,000.”
Freeport had outstanding traffic tickets amounting to $2.4 million, dating back to Jan. 1, 1990. What were Freeport officials doing for the past 26 years?
They offered a ticket amnesty program for 45 days, which brings in $386,000, and they call it “enormously successful”?
Great message: Break the law, get fined and don’t pay it for decades, with no penalties at all.
