Thank you for calling attention to what should be a critical campaign issue: Social Security [“What Democrats must do,” Editorial, July 24].

Social Security is the third leg of a three-legged stool, along with personal savings and retirement accounts.

Americans have a tough time saving because of stagnant wages, and employer-funded retirement accounts are more rare. Along with stock market volatility, that makes Social Security more important than ever to future generations.

I volunteer for AARP’s Take a Stand campaign to urge candidates for federal office to commit to keeping Social Security strong. We deserve to know before we vote what a candidate’s plan is.
