The acquisition of Aqua New York Inc. by American Water Works Co. is now complete -- nearly doubling American Water's customer base in New York and making it the largest investor-owned water utility in the state. Credit: Fotolia

Officials in Merrick, Wantagh and Malverne are in a dispute with New York American Water Co. over raising prices [“State PSC to hold water rate hearings,” News, Oct. 25]. I sympathize with them. This company bought Aqua, which took over service for Sea Cliff Water.

The water is terrible. It tastes bad, smells bad and leaves a red ring around toilet bowls and sinks. Complaining to the Town of Oyster Bay has been useless, and the company denies any problems. It has shown me test results that read as safe.

Prices have gone up, too. What can you do? They own the wells and pipes coming into the house; you can’t just change suppliers.
