A Center Moriches home, on an estate once belonging to the inventor of the paint can lid, is on the market for $2.25 million. The taxes are $37,349, and the property is in the Center Moriches Union Free School District.

Built in 2020, the contemporary home features three bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms. Overlooking Forge River, it sits on 4 acres at Old Neck Road South.

The road is part of the historic Masury family estate, which dates to the late 1800s and covered the southern part of this peninsula at the time, according to documents kept by the National Register of Historic Places. John W. Masury is best known for inventing the non-drip, metal paint can lids that are still seen today.

The main house of the estate was destroyed by a hurricane in 1938, and the Masury family sold the estate in 1954, after which the land was subdivided and built upon, the documents show. The historic ballroom still remains, located near the home.

"What a lot of people don't know about Center Moriches, and a lot of the South Shore, is that there used to be a lot of Gilded Age mansions on the bay," said listing agent Dana Bartel, of Compass.

The house is "modern in its appearance, with classic fixtures and finishes" such as the dark hardwood floors in the kitchen, Bartel said.

Other standout details include floor-to-ceiling windows, two fireplaces, a balcony, in-ground pool and cabana. The house, totaling 2,450 square feet, also includes solar panels.

"It's this really interesting blend of historical and contemporary," Bartel said.
