A Mediterranean-style home in Plandome, built in an area with ties to the family behind Duke University, is on the market for $4.599 million. The taxes are $42,803.

The Plandome Road house has five bedrooms and 4½ bathrooms. It is in the Manhasset School District.

Benjamin Newton Duke, who was vice president of the American Tobacco Company, ventured into real estate when he constructed homes in and around Plandome Heights (which is near Manhasset) in the early 1900s. His family is known for financing Duke University in North Carolina.

The homes were characterized by their red Spanish tile roofs, a newspaper advertisement from the time shows. The ad, published in the New York Daily Tribune in 1910, also states: "We give with each house a plot of land, from one-half to one acre, worth from $6,000 to $10,000."

This particular house belonged to Duke and his wife, said listing agent Ann Hance, of Compass.

"The others were built as sort of social homes for guests to come and stay," she said.

The house features a grand foyer encompassed by chevron-patterned flooring, six fireplaces (a mix of wood-burning and gas), a spacious dining room, full basement and central air conditioning. There is a two-car garage with a legal one-bedroom apartment that is currently being rented, Hance said.

The property spans more than 5,900 square feet, on a 0.62-acre lot.

The house is less than a mile away from Manhasset’s Long Island Rail Road station, with several businesses and eateries nearby.

"Plandome Road is a very typical Main Street," Hance said. "And this is a large home that’s close to all of those lifestyle amenities."
