THE SCOOP Smack in the center of Nassau County, East Meadow is best known as the home of the 930-acre Eisenhower Park, nearly a hundred acres larger than Manhattan's storied Central Park. But, said one lifelong resident, there is much more to this Town of Hempstead hamlet.

"You could never go a weekend in East Meadow without something going on," said native Richie Krug Jr., a real estate broker and a past president of the local Chamber of Commerce, among other community positions. "Whether it be a civic group, the Chamber, the Kiwanis Club doing something or various youth activity sports, from soccer to baseball to lacrosse to flag football, there's always something going on in East Meadow."

While not served by a Long Island Rail Road station — the nearest is in neighboring Westbury — East Meadow is bordered by major thoroughfares to the west (Meadowbrook State Parkway) and east (Wantagh State Parkway) and bisected by Hempstead Turnpike, making car access easy. The 6.3-square-mile hamlet is home to a Stew Leonard's supermarket, a Walmart big box store and a 48-lane Bowlero bowling alley.

In terms of longstanding local businesses, East Meadow Upholsterers turns 75 next year, and "A&C Pest Management is a 50-year, third-generation business," Krug said. "And you have the Grand Stage Diner, by the same people who owned the famous Grand Stage in Manhattan, and the Colony Diner, both on Hempstead Turnpike, and the Apollo Diner," on Merrick Avenue North. A beautification nonprofit, Friends for a Beautiful East Meadow, formed in 2024.

East Meadow's 530-bed Nassau University Medical Center teaching hospital, a Level I trauma center, has been a Long Island mainstay since 1935.

The jewel of the community, of course, is Eisenhower Park, where its Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater amphitheater hosts a series of free concerts each summer. Among other amenities are 14 lighted tennis courts, 14 ballfields, a pair each of football fields, cricket fields and pickleball courts, one outdoor and two indoor skating rinks, a basketball court, a bocce court, a fitness trail, an Olympic-sized pool and three 18-hole public golf courses, plus mini-golf.

There is also Senator Speno Memorial Park, "a neighborhood favorite with wide fields, playground space and room for kids to run," said Dennis Dunne Sr., the Town of Hempstead councilmember whose district includes East Meadow, in a statement supplied by the town's press office. "Just steps away is Veterans Memorial Park Pool, where families swim, relax and celebrate summer together." Little League plays at the multifield East Meadow Baseball Softball Complex.

The overall feel, said Krug, "is friendly. It is a town where people are gracious to one another and always looking out for each other. It is a town that works side by side with our elected officials to constantly better living standards for those of the hamlet."
