For half a century, a compact Cape on Islip's Spruce Street has been under the same ownership, property records confirm. There, the homeowner raised children who now have children of their own, said real estate agent Matthew Arnold.

The four-bed, one-bath home on a 0.14-acre lot is on the market for $499,900. Taxes on the property, which falls within the Islip School District, total $11,338.

"You don't get a lot for $500,000 on Long Island anymore," said Arnold, who has listed the property for Netter Real Estate.

Arnold described the 1,131-square-foot house as "a good starter home," with wood floors downstairs and an unfinished basement. Outside, there are a fenced backyard and a detached one-car garage. The house has gas-fueled baseboard heating and does not have air conditioning.

On the first floor of the house, there are two bedrooms, a full bathroom, a living room and kitchen, Arnold said. There are two additional bedrooms on the second floor. To Arnold, what the owner had described as a small home looked like opportunity.

"A homeowner sees what they see, and I think that what we see is the potential," he said.

In Arnold's view, a buyer might want to renovate the kitchen and finish the basement.

"The kitchen's in great shape," he said. "But nowadays people want the granite countertops and the stainless steel appliances."
