A pale blue house with a covered porch and muted red shutters in the village of Port Jefferson was "built like a fortress," said listing agent Margot Garant.

Inside, the walls wear clocks and paintings and wood-framed mirrors. In a kitchen with pale teal accents, white walls wear baking pans and other metal tools. Property records list an 1830 build year.

The two-bed, one-bath house is on the market, listed for $639,000, and so are the homeowner's possessions, Garant said. Those are expected to be sold separately for approximately $5,000, said Garant, of Jolie Powell Realty.

"The owners have been there since 1974, so they've kept the old charm alive," Garant said. "It needs to be brightened up now with a new owner."

Garant, who served as mayor of the Village of Port Jefferson for 14 years before stepping away from the office in 2023, described the house as a "charmer" that could do with some updating. A buyer might want to renovate the bathroom and kitchen, which matches the period of the home, she said.

"It's a true gem," Garant said. "It's one of those houses that, when you drive up or down the hill, you've always looked at and thought, 'wow, that's a great house.' "

Located on East Broadway, across the road from the Port Jefferson Village Center, the house is within walking distance of the downtown area. Taxes on the 0.12-acre lot, which falls within the Port Jefferson School District, total $5,258.

The house is 1,600 square feet and includes an attic and a small basement with an outside entrance, Garant said. There is no garage on the property, but a parking area behind the house accommodates two cars, she added.

The home has three functioning, wood-burning fireplaces — in the dining room, living room and primary bedroom — and wood flooring. In addition to the fireplaces, there is baseboard heating. The home does not have air conditioning.

Garant said the house is for someone who loves the 1830s time period.

"I felt like I was stepping back in time," she said of her first impression of the house. "Into a true shipbuilder's home."
