THE SCOOP The great diversity of Westbury can be summed up in two terms: food and houses of worship. In just 2.3 square miles, this Town of North Hempstead village spans continents.

Along Post Avenue, "We have a kebab house that is Lebanese and one that is Afghani, so they're both kebab houses but they're different styles. And there are multiple Central American restaurants, so if you want to try the food of Guatemala or Honduras, you have those options as well as traditional Mexican," said Julie Lyon, head of the nonprofit arts council Westbury Arts. "You have [the restaurant] Guiradelco, which is Filipino cuisine. And there are a number of Italian places. It's a little bit of a melting pot in terms of food."

And places of worship. "St. Brigid is one of the venerable Catholic churches on Long Island," Mayor Peter I. Cavallaro, a lifelong resident, said of the first Roman Catholic church in Nassau County, dating to 1840, with its present building erected in 1916. "We have historically Black churches. We have a Byzantine Rite church. We have the Church of the Advent and the Methodist Church."

Westbury, too, is home to The Islamic Center of Long Island, the oldest purpose-built mosque in the two counties. And there has been a Westbury Friends meeting house here since 1702 — naturally, since Westbury was settled and named by Quakers in the 1600s.

Cavallaro called all this "a reflection of the diversity of the community. It's not only diverse racially and ethnically but also very diverse economically," with houses running the gamut from about $500,000 to $3 million.

Centrally located, with a Long Island Rail Road station and two major thoroughfares — Jericho Turnpike is the village's northern border, and Northern State Parkway runs the entire width — Westbury is close to such green spaces as Old Westbury Gardens in that adjacent village and Cantiague Park in Hicksville.

The community itself has the small Alphonse Campbell Park; the Westbury Water District Athletic Fields; and green spaces within the Village Community Center-Village Recreation Center complex. Those facilities offer a variety of activities from bocce to boxing, and offer a senior center and youth programs.

Westbury Arts sponsors an annual summer concert series, as well as "nine to 10 exhibitions every year in a variety of genres, not just visual arts," Lyon said. The organization provides space for theater and music, and it hosts the showcase Westbury's Got Talent.

Among the entrepreneurial amenities are the event venues Westbury Manor, in an 1880s estate, and The Space, housed in the 1927 former Westbury Movie Theater building.
