Wyandanch: 'Beautiful, diverse,' community with burgeoning downtown draws buyers
THE SCOOP The hamlet of Wyandanch is an enclave of affordable housing with its own Long Island Rail Road station and a solid track record of continuing development.
Among the highlights: Wyandanch Village, a highly successful income-restricted rental complex that has been built in phases since 2015, will add 202 apartments in January to the current 395. An 11-acre technology park promising 1,500 to 2,500 jobs won environmental approval in October. And the State Assembly announced in July that sports fields and other facilities at Wyandanch Park are getting a $1.1 million upgrade.
As well, said Anthony Manetta, a Town of Babylon councilmember, an upcoming phase of Wyandanch Village "is going to be home ownership. A number of townhomes are going to be built there, which creates a pathway to building personal equity."
"Wyandanch maybe hasn't been given the attention it has deserved over the past two decades, but that's changing now," said Latesha Walker, president of both the school board and of the civic association Concerned Citizens of Wyandanch.
"We are burgeoning for young entrepreneurs, young socialites, young professionals. We have a lot of residential homes that are being remodeled, rehabbed and improved, and we have really smart developments going up to make space for growing families."

This marks a sea change since a 2000 Suffolk County Planning Report Committee called the predominantly African American and Hispanic hamlet the most economically distressed community on Long Island.
Following the 2004 formation of Babylon's Wyandanch Rising Implementation Committee and years of work, the median household income by 2023 has jumped 54.4% to $89,129 — nearly 8% greater than that of New York State as a whole, according to City-Data.com. As newcomers flocked in, the population has increased more than 20%, closing in on 14,000.
The heart of the 2.17-square-mile hamlet is Wyandanch Plaza. Here seasonally is an ice-skating rink as well as a summer concert series, an annual Winter Spectacular with holiday market and tree-lighting and other events including, this past September, the Q31 Film Festival, showcasing Caribbean and Latinx artists.
Other amenities include the 23-plus-acre Geiger Park, containing the Carlls River Botanical Garden. Across the street from Wyandanch's western border is the private Colonial Springs Golf Club, and just across the southeast border is Belmont Lake State Park. Adventureland Amusement Park is only a few minutes away.
The Wyandanch Union Free School District has two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.
"Wyandanch is a beautiful, diverse community that over the last several years has really been on an upswing," Manetta said. "There's been a tremendous amount of investment and a lot of people all heading in the same direction to make it even a better place to live, work and raise a family."
Of historical note is a cemetery owned by Pinelawn Memorial Park and identified on historic maps as Greenlawn Cemetery, holding the remains of at least four veterans of the Civil War's United States Colored Troops, as well as of Black and Indigenous people who died in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
