Jose Fernandez struck out 12 in seven innings and won his sixth straight start for the visiting Miami Marlins in a 9-1 decision over the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday.
Fernandez (7-2) struck out eight of the last 10 batters he faced and struck out every hitter in the Rays lineup at least once. The 23-year-old righthander from Tampa gave up six hits in beating his hometown Rays for the first time in three tries.
Adeiny Hechavarria and Chris Johnson homered for the Marlins, who won three of four in their annual series against the Rays.
Hechavarria’s third home run drove in the final two runs of a three-run second inning off Rays starter Drew Smyly (2-6). Johnson made it 5-0 with his second homer an inning later, Johnson’s first hit in 22 interleague at bats.
Johnson drove in another run with a single in the eighth, one of five straight hits off reliever Ryan Garton in his major league debut.
Marcel Osuna had two hits for Miami, reaching base in his 33rd straight game, one short of the franchise record.
Brandon Guyer homered off Fernandez in the third, his fifth home run and the major league-leading 67th homer for the Rays.
Pirates 8, Diamondbacks 3: Josh Harrison came off the bench to hit a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning to help host Pittsburgh. The pinch-hitter gave the Pirates a 5-3 lead.
The runs gave reliever A.J. Schugel (1-1) his first major league win after he had surrendered the lead inherited from starter Gerrit Cole in the top half of the inning. Schugel gave up a two-run single to Paul Goldschmidt in his only inning of work.
Arizona starter Patrick Corbin (2-4) took the loss. He was responsible for both runners that scored on Harrison’s double, which was hit off reliever Jake Barrett.
Cole hit a 409-foot, three-run homer in the third inning to left-center field.
Moustakas tears right ACL
The Kansas City Royals have placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the 15-day disabled list with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Moustakas and leftfielder Alex Gordon collided Sunday while chasing a fly ball in Chicago. Gordon went on the disabled list Monday with a right wrist fracture.
Moustakas, a 2015 All-Star game selection, was hitting .240 with seven home runs and 13 RBIs in 27 games. It is Moustakas’ second trip to the disabled list in May after missing three weeks with a broken left thumb.
Olivera suspended after arrest for domestic violence
The Atlanta Braves’ dismal season took another turn for the worse when outfielder Hector Olivera was suspended through Aug. 1 for his arrest on domestic violence charges.
The suspension, announced by commissioner Rob Manfred, is without pay and covers 82 games, retroactive to April 30.
Olivera was arrested April 13 at a hotel outside Washington, D.C., charged with assault and battery of a woman and he was immediately placed on leave.
Agreeing with the police report filed in Arlington, Va., Manfred’s office finished an investigation that concluded Olivera was responsible for visible bruises on the woman’s body. A police spokeswoman said at the time that Olivera and the woman were acquainted.
Losing the Olivera, 31, was a big blow to the Braves, who have the second-worst record in the majors and rank last in homers, RBIs and runs scored.
Allen suspended after arrest
The Minnesota Twins have suspended pitching coach Neil Allen indefinitely with pay, following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.
Minnesota made minor league pitching coordinator Eric Rasmussen the interim pitching coach. The team was off Thursday, traveling to Seattle for a series starting Friday.
The Twins issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the pending DWI charge, but did not comment further.
Allen, 58, is in his second season with the Twins. He pitched in the major leagues for 11 seasons, beginning with the Mets in 1979. Allen, a recovering alcoholic, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis in an interview last year that he hadn’t had a drink since 1994. — AP
