Andy Pettitte took another step toward getting a crack at the Yankees rotation Monday night in Clearwater.

Pettitte, pitching for the single-A Tampa Yankees, went three innings, allowing two hits -- both doubles -- and an earned run.

The southpaw threw 32 pitches, 26 for strikes, and struck out two batters. He didn't walk anybody.

Pettitte was originally scheduled to pitch in an extended spring training game, but was later moved to the single-A game. He threw a scoreless inning in the Yankees' spring training finale last Wednesday against the New York Mets.

The 39-year-old, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2010, could be back with the Yankees by May.
