Federal prosecutors are seeking to reduce Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch’s prison sentence by 16 months because of his “substantial assistance” to the government’s prosecution of other people, according to a court filing on Wednesday.

A federal judge sentenced Bosch to four years in prison last February for illegally supplying steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs to professional baseball players — most notably the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez — as well as college and high school athletes.

Bosch, who pleaded guilty to steroid distribution in October 2014 as part of a deal with prosecutors, sought a sentence of just under three years — below the federal sentencing guidelines of 41 to 51 months — because of his cooperation with prosecutors and his work with Major League Baseball’s investigation in 2013.

Bosch was the key witness in Major League Baseball’s case against Rodriguez that led to the Yankees designated hitter getting suspended for the 2014 season. Bosch testified for a week during those proceedings.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharad A. Motiani said in the motion filed Wednesday that he would elaborate on “the nature and quality” of Bosch’s continued assistance to federal prosecutors at a hearing to discuss the merits of reducing Bosch’s sentence.
