Yankees catcher Austin Romine hit his first career home run in the seventh inning on Sunday, a solo shot to left-centerfield, off San Diego Padres reliever Dale Thayer.
It took the rookie 89 career at-bats to collect his first homer, a bomb, off a 2-2 fastball that caught a little too much of the plate. At the time, it cut the Yankees' deficit to three runs but they would not score again, falling to the Pades, 6-3.
The Yankees now have seven home runs from the catcher's position in 2013, which looks to be significantly less than in 2012 when they hit 22.
Coincidentally, former Yankee catcher Russell Martin, who the Bombers let walk this offseason, hit his 10th home run of the season Sunday for the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates, a three-run shot in a 5-1 Pirates' victory over the Colorado Rockies.
