Baseball report: Bautista hits 24th homer as Jays pop Red Sox
David Ortiz knows plenty about power hitting, and he doesn't understand why Jose Bautista isn't in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game. The Boston Red Sox slugger might have a point.
Bautista hit his major league-leading 24th home run and Alex Gonzalez and Adam Lind also went deep Saturday as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston, 9-5.
"[Bautista] should be there because he's a home run hitter and he's swinging the bat really good," Ortiz said. "I think he's definitely got to be in."
However, the final two spots in Monday's derby went to Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher and Arizona's Chris Young yesterday.
Rays 4, Indians 0
Matt Garza allowed one hit over six innings for host Tampa Bay. Garza (10-5), who struck out two and walked one during an 88-pitch outing, was on a pitch count of around 90 after he worked out of the bullpen earlier in the week.
Tigers 7, Twins 4
Johnny Damon's three-run shot in the fifth inning was Detroit's fourth home run against Nick Blackburn.
Damon's drive gave the Tigers a four-run lead. AL Central-leading Detroit has won five straight overall and 17 of 19 at home.
White Sox 5, Royals 1
Gavin Floyd pitched effectively into the eighth, and Carlos Quentin hit two of Chicago's three homers as the host White Sox won their seventh straight.
Lee makes debut
Cliff Lee went the distance and allowed six runs, all earned, in his debut for the host Texas Rangers, who lost, 6-1, to the Baltimore Orioles. Lee allowed three homers. - AP
