Baseball report: Cardinals blast Phillies
Albert Pujols' two-run home run in the fifth inning began a barrage of four long balls in a span of six at-bats and Blake Hawksworth survived a rocky start in the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-4 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies last night.
Rookie Allen Craig added his first career homer and Skip Schumaker hit his third of the season in a five-run fifth against Kyle Kendrick. Randy Winn led off the sixth with a pinch-hit shot off Chad Durbin.
Marlins 9, Rockies 8
Pinch hitter Donnie Murphy hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning for host Florida. It was the fifth lead change in the game.
Brewers 3, Pirates 1Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks each hit home runs for the second consecutive game, Chris Capuano won for the first time in more than three years for visiting Milwaukee.
Reds 7, Nationals 2Johnny Cueto pitched six innings around a rain delay and drove home two runs for host Cincinnati. Jonny Gomes and Miguel Cairo added solo homers.
Astros 11, Cubs 5Jason Castro hit a three-run homer and Carlos Lee had a two-run double in visiting Houston's five-run first inning. Wandy Rodriguez gave up five runs in six innings but earned the win because the Astros spotted him an 8-0 lead.
Rays 8, Orioles 1
Wade Davis allowed one run over eight innings in a sparkling performance and Evan Longoria had two hits during a seven-run third inning. Jason Bartlett drove in two runs for the Rays, who are 4-0 against the Orioles at Camden Yards.
Rangers 8, Tigers 6Nelson Cruz's two-run homer in the 14th inning gave visiting Texas a win. The game had a scary moment in the sixth inning when Rangers reliever Dustin Nippert was hit in the head by Austin Jackson's line drive. The ball landed in leftfield for a double. Nippert walked off the field under his own power. Detroit lost third baseman Brandon Inge for 4-6 weeks after he broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Scott Feldman.
Royals 5, Blue Jays 4Alberto Callaspo's RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning helped host Kansas City snap a six-game losing streak. Yunel Escobar homered with two outs in the second. He has homered in consecutive games and has seven RBIs in that span.
Indians 10, Twins 4Trevor Crowe drove in two runs and had four hits, and visiting Cleveland collected a season-high 20 hits in its fifth straight win. - AP
