Baseball report: Rays score 4 in 11th, then hold on to beat Marlins
B.J. Upton and Reid Brignac drew bases-loaded walks and Jason Bartlett added a two-run single - all with two outs - in a four-run 11th inning and the Tampa Bay Rays then survived a three-run rally by the Marlins for a 9-8 win last night in Miami.
Chris Coghlan singled home two runs and Gaby Sanchez had an RBI single to move the Marlins within 9-8 and put runners on first and third with none out in the bottom of the 11th. But Lance Cormier picked up two strikeouts and got Dan Uggla to fly out.
Carl Crawford had four hits and scored three runs for the Rays. James Shields, making the first relief appearance of his 133-game career, threw a scoreless 10th and was one of nine Rays pitchers. The Rays (42-26) remained tied with the Yankees for the AL East lead and baseball's best record.
Red Sox 5, Dodgers 4
Dustin Pedroia singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth for the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez homered in his second game back at Fenway Park against his former team, a sixth-inning solo shot off Tim Wakefield. Victor Martinez had a two-run homer and Kevin Youkilis a solo shot for the Red Sox.
White Sox 1, Nationals 0
Jake Peavy (6-5) pitched a three-hitter for his fourth career shutout as visiting Chicago won its season-high fifth straight.
Braves 5, Royals 4
Troy Glaus hit a leadoff homer in the ninth to give host Atlanta its fourth straight victory.
Blue Jays 3, Giants 0
Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer off Matt Cain (6-5) to snap a scoreless tie in the eighth.- AP
