One devious curve at a time, Cliff Lee has become a strikeout specialist.
Lee hit double-digit strikeouts for the sixth time this season, fanning 10 in seven shutout innings and leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night. Lee (5-5) bounced back from one of his worst starts of the season with one of his best. He allowed seven hits and walked only one, while continuing to strike out batters at a career-best rate. He has 15 career games with double-digit strikeouts -- six this season -- and leads the National League with 100.
His explanation for all the Ks? "Swinging and missing more," he said. "I'm not trying to strike guys out at all. I'm trying to get them out as quick as possible. For whatever reason, it's kind of gone that way."
Lee even shook off a liner to the knee in the seventh. He was fine and so were the Phillies in their first game back after a disappointing 4-5 road trip.
Lee found his command by the fourth, his curve and his way back to a more typical outing. "It's a big pitch for me," Lee said. His six double-digit strikeout games are the most for a Phillies pitcher since Curt Schilling had 15 in 1998.
Tigers 13, Rangers 7: Brennan Boesch had two of visiting Detroit's four home runs while setting career highs with five hits and five RBIs, and Max Scherzer pitched just long enough for his first win in nearly a month. All of Detroit's homers came off Colby Lewis, who gave up nine runs in 31/3 innings.
Brewers 7, Marlins 2: Prince Fielder homered and drove in four runs to help visiting Milwaukee complete its first four-game sweep since August 2008. Zack Greinke (5-1) allowed two runs in seven innings. He won his fifth consecutive decision and lowered his ERA to 4.83.
Reds 8, Cubs 2: Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs as Cincinnati sent Chicago to its seventh straight loss. Gomes has only two homers since April 17, both of them setting up wins over the Cubs at Great American Ball Park.
Orioles 4, Athletics 2:Brian Matusz (1-0) and three relievers combined on a seven-hitter as host Baltimore extended Oakland's losing streak to a season-high seven games. Matt Wieters had two hits, an RBI and a run for the Orioles.
Twins 6, Indians 4: Scott Baker survived a shaky start and Matt Tolbert drove in two runs as visiting Minnesota extended its winning streak to a season-high five games.
White Sox 3, Mariners 1: Paul Konerko homered and John Danks pitched into the eighth for his first win of the season. The White Sox beat the Mariners for the ninth straight time at U.S. Cellular Field.-- AP
