The Royals had 20 hits off six Boston pitchers, including utilityman Bill Hall, making his first big-league appearance as a pitcher. The Royals pummeled Tim Wakefield for 12 hits and nine runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is back on the 15-day disabled list after he complained of more soreness in his ribs. He missed six weeks and played only three games before experiencing more pain.
