Braves fall in 13th; Phillies face Cards
With the season on the line, the host Atlanta Braves couldn't get the final three outs. Now, they'll have the whole winter to ponder an unprecedented collapse.
Braves closer Craig Kimbrel surrendered the tying run in the ninth, and Hunter Pence came through with a two-out, run-scoring single in the 13th to give the Phillies a 4-3 victory that ended the Braves season last night without a trip to the playoffs that looked like a certainty just a few weeks ago. The Phillies set a club record with 102 wins and will take on the Cardinals in the NLDS on Saturday.
The Braves were 10 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis before play on Aug. 26.
Cardinals 8, Astros 0: Chris Carpenter and visiting St. Louis clinched the NL wild card after he struck out 11 and allowed two hits in his 15th career complete-game shutout. Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman drove in runs with singles, and David Freese doubled before Houston recorded its first out.
Brewers 7, Pirates 3: Zack Grienke capped a perfect season at home to help Milwaukee clinch home-field advantage in the first round of playoffs. Carlos Gomez, Corey Hart and Jonathan Lucroy homered for the Brewers, who set a franchise record with 96 wins. Ryan Braun's pursuit of Jose Reyes for the NL batting title ended early. He went 0 for 4 to finish at .332.
Rangers 3, Angels 1: Mike Napoli broke a tie in the ninth inning with his fourth homer in two games, and visiting Texas finally clinched home-field advantage in the AL division series. Napoli also homered in the second inning as the Rangers set a franchise record with their 96th victory -- including six straight heading into the postseason. With 14 wins in their final 16 games, Texas (96-66) will host Tampa Bay Friday.
Tigers 5, Indians 4: Miguel Cabrera singled and doubled, all but wrapping up the AL batting title, and Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth for host Detroit. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 49th save in 49 chances. The AL Central-champion Tigers will start the playoffs on the road against the Yankees Friday night. -- AP
