Second baseman Martin Prado broke the second knuckle on his right pinkie finger while diving into home plate in the Braves' win over the Reds Friday night in Cincinnati, an injury that will sideline the leadoff hitter for a week to 10 days.

Prado jammed the hand while sliding hard into home plate during the 10th inning. X-rays initially were inconclusive. Tests yesterday found the fracture, which won't need surgery.

Yost gets two-year extension

Royals manager Ned Yost has received a two-year contract extension that would keep him in charge of Kansas City through the 2012 season. Yost replaced manager Trey Hillman, who was fired May 13.

Cards retire Herzog's number

St. Louis retired former manager Whitey Herzog's No. 24 in a ceremony prior to yesterday's game with the Pirates.

The sold-out crowd at Busch Stadium gave the newly inducted Hall of Famer a prolonged standing ovation after owner Bill DeWitt made the announcement.
