Milwaukee, meet Brian Fitzpatrick.
After a dominant start to his season with Triple-A Nashville, Port Jefferson’s Fitzpatrick — a 6-7, 25-year-old lefthander — was selected to the Brewers’ roster Wednesday. He tossed 1 1/3 scoreless frames in his MLB debut during Milwaukee's 6-2 loss to Arizona, giving up two hits and a walk.
Fitzpatrick, a 2022 10th-round pick who pitched at Rutgers and St. Anthony’s High School, told reporters in Milwaukee on Wednesday that he received the news Tuesday afternoon during his pregame routine in Nashville. He said his pitching coach Tyler Thornburg tapped him on the shoulder and said manager Rick Sweet wanted to talk to him.
“My heart kind of sank a little bit. I was like, ‘OK, that's either really good or really bad,’” Fitzpatrick said. “I walked in there, and he said, ‘What took you so long?’ Because I was still getting changed, and I was like, ‘Well, what do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, you're going up to the big leagues, I figured you’d get in here a little sooner.’”
Fitzpatrick, who started last season at the High-A level, pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings for Nashville this season, striking out 11 and posting an 0.87 WHIP. He wasn’t in MLB camp this spring but threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in big-league spring training games.
“I feel like I fit in great,” Fitzpatrick said. “I feel like I can definitely help in any way that I can, but I feel like I fit in really well.”
