When the Mets traded Carlos Beltran to the Giants before the non-waiver trade deadline last season, they were waving goodbye to the old and going with the new. By that point, Beltran had been supplanted in center and had become a right fielder, a position the Mets believed they had covered with the young, powerful Lucas Duda.
This season, Beltran has gotten off to a hot start with the Cardinals and Duda has been less than lukewarm in Flushing:
| Carlos Beltran | Lucas Duda | |
| Average | .294 | .257 |
| On-base percentage | .394 | .346 |
| Slugging percentage | .594 | .413 |
| Home runs | 15 | 7 |
| RBIs | 42 | 20 |
| Runs | 32 | 26 |
