Baltimore slugger Chris Davis was suspended 25 games without pay after he tested positive for an amphetamine, MLB announced Friday morning. Davis, in a statement, identified the substance as Adderall.

The ban includes the final 17 games of the regular season and would extend eight games into the postseason, if the Orioles make it that far. That means Davis wouldn't be eligible to return until the American League Championship Series at the earliest.

"I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization and especially the fans," Davis said in the statement. "I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately."

The Yankees play the Orioles in a doubleheader on Friday and have eight games remaining against Baltimore.

Davis, an AL MVP candidate in 2013 after hitting an MLB-best 53 home runs, has slumped badly this season. The 28-year-old has hit .196 with a .300 on-base percentage and 26 home runs in 127 games.
