Conrad's slam caps seven-run ninth for Braves
Brooks Conrad hit a pinch-hit grand slam to cap a seven-run ninth inning that gave the host Atlanta Braves a stunning 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Thursday.
Conrad's one-out drive deflected off leftfielder Laynce Nix's glove as he reached over the top of the wall at the 380-foot sign. "I hit it and I was kind of talking to it to get out of there and I saw [Nix] jump up," Conrad said. "From my angle . . . it looked like he kind of brought it back. I put my hands to my helmet and said, 'No way he caught that.' ''
"It was a horrible ending," said Dusty Baker, whose Reds had scored eight runs in the second, helped by Joey Votto's grand slam.
The Braves began the ninth with four straight hits, including Nate McLouth's two-run single. Miguel Cairo then committed the Reds' fourth error on a double-play ball.
