Brooks Conrad's second pinch-hit grand slam of the year put visiting Atlanta ahead in an eight-run eighth inning as the Braves rallied past the Florida Marlins, 10-5, last night.

Six of the runs were unearned because of two errors by third baseman Jorge Cantu. Conrad's one-out slam put the Braves ahead 9-5.

Johnny Cueto (10-2) went eight scoreless innings and Joey Votto and Ramon Hernandez homered for visiting Cincinnati.

Mat Latos (11-4) pitched effectively in six innings in his first start since July 8 to lift visiting San Diego.

Ben Zobrist and Carlos Peña homered and David Price (13-5) went seven-plus innings as Tampa Bay won at Progressive Field after 18 straight losses there over nearly five years.

Magglio out 6-8 weeks

Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez fractured his right ankle on a slide into home plate during a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays in Detroit and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Giants OF in hospital

San Francisco outfielder Eugenio Velez spent the night at an Arizona hospital after being struck in the head by a foul ball while he was in the dugout.

The team reported he was doing well considering the circumstances.

Velez was standing in the dugout in the fourth inning against Arizona when teammate Pat Burrell hit a sharp liner into the dugout. Velez was knocked off his feet and teammates immediately gathered around. - AP
