Contest: Jackie Robinson, Day 2

Today we give away the paperback edition of "Opening Day," the terrific documentation of Jackie Robinson's rookie season with the Dodgers, 1947, by Jonathan Eig.

You know what vignette has stayed with me, now that I've finished the book? Robinson was invited to myriad banquets during the 1947-48 season, to honor him for what he accomplished. He never skipped dessert, Eig notes. So when Robinson showed up for spring training in 1948, he had gained 30 pounds.

Can you imagine a player - especially someone as high-profile as Robinson - showing up to spring training 30 pounds overweight nowadays? He'd get crushed in the yakosphere (copyright Neil Best).
