SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — A spokeswoman for the national prosecutor’s office in the Dominican Republic says a second person has been arrested in the investigation into the shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz. There is no public indication that the man is the suspected shooter.
Spokeswoman Julieta Tejeda reported the arrest to a group of journalists via WhatsApp on Tuesday night. She declined to provide further details.
Ortiz was shot Sunday and is recovering from exploratory surgery in Boston, where he was flown Monday night. His wife, Tiffany, said in a statement earlier Tuesday that Ortiz is “stable, awake and resting comfortably” in the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is expected to remain there several days.
Dominican doctors removed Ortiz’s gallbladder and part of his intestine.
Beloved in his hometown, Ortiz traveled the dangerous streets of Santo Domingo with little or no security, trusting in his fans to protect him.
Big Papi’s guard was down even at hot spots such as the Dial Bar and Lounge, where the Dominican business and entertainment elite can cross paths with shadier figures in a country where fortunes are often made in drug smuggling and money laundering.
Police are investigating what made him the target of what appeared to be an assassination attempt.
Enraged fans captured the motorcyclist who transported the gunman. They beat him bloody before handing him over to police, but the gunman was still at large Tuesday. The motorcyclist in the apparent murder attempt, Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, was charged in the case Tuesday, according to officials.
Feliz Garcia was one of several people in custody, a law-enforcement official told The Associated Press.
Attorney Deivi Solano said Feliz Garcia had no idea who he’d picked up Sunday night and what was about to happen when he stopped to take a fare. “He didn’t know what they were going to do." Solano said. "He’s a fan of David’s.”
Police are investigating whether a brief relationship formed in Santo Domingo set in motion a chain of events that led to the shooting, a second law enforcement official said.
