Desperate for an offensive spark, the Yankees are turning to...David Phelps?
Yes, you read that right: Phelps, Wednesday night's starter, will bat eighth on Wednesday night against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Phelps will bat ahead of catcher Austin Romine and behind third baseman Chris Nelson.
The last time a Yankees starting pitcher batted eighth in the lineup? Don Larsen, back on August 28, 1957. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout as the Yankees beat the White Sox, 5-4, at Comiskey Park. (For what it's worth, reliever Bob Turley replaced Larsen and went 0-for-1, making him the last Yankees pitcher to bat in the eight-hole.)
Zack Greinke was the last pitcher to bat eighth in a team's lineup, going 0-for-3 in the Royals' 2-1 win over the Houston Astros on June 23, 2009.
The Yankees' full starting lineup:
Brett Gardner CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Lyle Overbay 1B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jayson Nix SS
Chris Nelson 3B
David Phelps P
Austin Romine C
