Derek Jeter reaches 200 hits for eighth time in his career

Derek Jeter isn’t 100 percent but as he likes to say, no one is this time of year.

And so, still dealing with a bone bruise in his left ankle that kept him from playing the field since leaving a Sept. 12 game in Boston, Jeter was back at short for the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Blue Jays.

In his first at-bat, Jeter singled to center for his 200th hit of the season. Jeter has eight 200-hit seasons, tying him with Lou Gehrig for the most in franchise history.

“I saw him yesterday [Monday] and he said he felt a lot better,” Joe Girardi said Wednesday morning in announcing his plan to play Jeter in the field the second game. “So I’m hoping even another night [Tuesday’s rain out] would help it more.”

Jeter did not play in the first game, a 4-2 victory, but Girardi said had Blue Jays lefty Ricky Romero started that game, Jeter would have been in the lineup and sat the second game instead.
