With Olympic gold comes responsibilities as well as benefits. Sixteen–year-old gymnast and America’s newest sweetheart, Gabby Douglas, will be at Citi Field on Thursday on the last Citi Field Kids event of the season to inspire children from the YMCA with her story and triumphs from London. This is a responsibility.
Just a kid herself, it is strange to think some of those kids will be around her age. Citi Field Kids has a “community-based initiative for New York City-based middle and high school students.”
There is no inspiration like the kind that comes from someone your own age. Hopefully she’ll be able to give these kids the notion, “if I can do it so can you.” Douglas has said her life growing up wasn’t easy, so I’m sure she can empathize with them.
The young star made history by becoming the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competition at the same Olympics. This shows drive for herself as well as sportsmanship, qualities all kids should learn.
Douglas will also be throwing out the first pitch at the game, where the Mets face the Colorado Rockies. This is definitely a benefit.
