Hamels dominates, Phils beat Pads again
Cole Hamels tossed eight dominant innings and the host Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres for the eighth straight time, 3-1, Friday night.
Hamels (12-5) allowed one run and three hits, striking out 10. The All-Star lefty bounced back from a rough outing last Saturday against the Mets, retiring the last 10 batters he faced. He's tied with Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens for the most wins in the NL.
"You hydrate enough and convince yourself you have to go out there and make pitches no matter what," Hamels said. "If your body is prepared for it, you can do it. There's a lot worse things people have to go through than playing baseball in 110 degrees."
Carlos Ruiz had an RBI double in the second, Padres starter Cory Luebke (3-4) balked in a run in the fourth and John Mayberry Jr. doubled in another later in the fourth.
Braves 6, Reds 4: Dan Uggla's first career pinch-hit home run lifted visiting Atlanta. Uggla, who missed the last two starts with a strained left calf, batted with two outs in the ninth inning for reliever Jonny Venters (5-1).
Cardinals 6, Pirates 4: Albert Pujols went 4-for-5 -- including his 27th career home run at PNC Park -- for visiting St. Louis.
Cubs 4, Astros 2: Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano each hit fifth-inning homers to lead host Chicago. It was Ramirez's 18th homer, a two-run shot that capped the Cubs' four-run rally in the inning. He leads the majors with 13 homers since June 24.
Red Sox 7, Mariners 4: Jacoby Ellsbury hit his seventh home run of the month and John Lackey (8-8) picked up his third consecutive win as host Boston extended Seattle's losing streak to 13.
Royals 10, Rays 4: Melky Cabrera had three hits and drove in three runs, Billy Butler homered for the first time in six weeks and Jeff Francoeur went 3-for-5 with an RBI for host Kansas City.
Angels 6, Orioles 1: Ervin Santana (5-8) took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and Vernon Wells hit a grand slam in the ninth for visiting Los Angeles.
Tigers 8, Twins 2: Jose Valverde got a game-ending double play and Jhonny Peralta finished a triple short of the cycle with four RBIs to lift visiting Detroit to its 11th straight win over Minnesota.
