Harrelson on carpet for criticizing ump
Chicago White Sox TV broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson says he snapped when he went on a tirade criticizing an umpire this week and after discussions with commissioner Bud Selig and team owner Jerry Reinsdorf, Harrelson said he can't guarantee a repeat won't occur.
"I didn't talk to the commissioner. The commissioner talked to me. I didn't talk with Jerry, Jerry talked to me," Harrelson said Friday.
Without a warning, umpire Mark Wegner ejected Chicago rookie starter Jose Quintana in the fourth inning Wednesday at Tampa Bay after he threw a pitch behind the Rays' Ben Zobrist. An inning earlier, White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski had been hit by a pitch. Harrelson ranted in the booth at Wegner.
"I'll tell you what, they have got to start making guys be accountable. That is totally absurd. Here's an umpire in the American League that knows nothing about the game of baseball," Harrelson said on the air.
Harrelson wouldn't divulge the specifics of his conversations with Selig and Reinsdorf.
"I'll tell you I'm going to do everything in my power not to let it happen again, but who can say?" said Harrelson, a former major-leaguer in his 28th season in the White Sox booth.
Guerrero to Triple-A
The Blue Jays sent Vladimir Guerrero, 37, to Triple-A Las Vegas. Guerrero, who signed a minor-league deal with the Jays on May 10, has never played in Triple-A. He skipped from Double-A to the Expos in 1996, and all of his previous minor-league rehab assignments have been at Double-A or lower.-- AP
