Ivan Nova undergoes MRI on elbow, doctor recommends surgery

After being placed on the disabled list Sunday with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Ivan Nova underwent an MRI on Tuesday that confirmed the original diagnosis. Team physician Christopher Ahmad conducted the MRI at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Surgery, which would end Nova's season, has been recommended.
Nova left his last start Saturday after just four innings. He gave up eight earned runs on eight hits, including four home runs, and a walk in a 16-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. On the season, Nova is 2-2 with an 8.27 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
The injury leaves a hole in the Yankees rotation. Vidal Nuno, who made his first start of the year Sunday, will likely fill the void. Nuno delivered five shutout innings while giving up three hits and two walks and striking out six in the Yankees' bounce-back 5-1 win over the Rays.
