Javier Vazquez, Mike Pelfrey and Dave Roberts

Not surprisingly, the Yankees will skip Javier Vazquez's turn in Boston, and push him back to Monday in Detroit. It's the right call, but it not likes it solves the problem. From listening to Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman, it sounds to me like the Yankees are utterly stumped as to what is plaguing Vazquez.

As Cashman said, simply, of Vazquez, "He’s not the same right now" as he was last year.

Vazquez usually throws in the bullpen two days after his start, so that would've been today. Instead, Vazquez is taking an extra day, then will throw tomorrow and then Friday. The bullpen sessions will be more arduous than standard sessions, Girardi said.

But again, these are pretty much stabs in the dark. We'll just have to wait until Monday. But if Johnny Damon hits Vazquez's first pitch on Monday for a homer, that probably won't be a good sign.

--Other news from the Stadium: Alex Rodriguez is back in the lineup, and as soon as after tonight's game, the Yankees will send a reliever (likely Boone Logan or Mark Melancon) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barres and call up Greg Golson, who will give the Yankees the outfielder they lost when Curtis Granderson went on the disabled list.

--As if the Mets weren't having a bad enough road trip, Mike Pelfrey had an MRI on his "tight" right shoulder. The Mets say that everything came up fine, and that Pelfrey will make his next assigned start Friday against the Giants at home. Stay tuned, obviously.

--Best wishes to Dave Roberts, a really good guy (even if the Yankees don't think so - our second 2004 ALCS mention in this post) who is battling Hodgkin's lymphoma.
