Jays avoid sweep against Red Sox

Drew Hutchison, a 21-year-old rookie, won for the fourth time in five starts, Jose Bautista backed him with a three-run homer and the host Toronto Blue Jays beat righthander Daniel Bard and the Boston Red Sox, 5-1, Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

"Hutch continues to mature right in front of us," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "He kept going, kept putting up zeros, kept the momentum on our side."

Hutchison (5-2) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The Blue Jays took advantage of an erratic performance by Bard, who allowed five runs, walked six, struck out two and hit two batters in 12/3 innings.

Rays 8, Orioles 4: B.J. Upton hit a tiebreaking two-run double and Matt Moore won for the first time after losing four straight decisions for host Tampa Bay. Upton gave the Rays a 4-2 lead with a two-out hit off Jake Arrieta in the fifth. Arrieta walked three during the inning.

Rangers 7, Angels 3: Matt Harrison won his third straight start, Nelson Cruz hit a long two-run homer and visiting Texas avoided a three-game sweep.

Twins 5, Indians 3: Scott Diamond allowed three unearned runs in seven innings for visiting Minnesota. Joe Mauer's first-inning RBI single off Justin Masterson put Minnesota ahead 1-0. Mauer left in the ninth with a sprained right thumb.

White Sox 4, Mariners 2: Chris Sale pitched a five-hitter for his first major-league complete game and host Chicago picked up its 10th win in 11 tries. Sale struck out eight and walked two and Alex Rios drove in two runs.

Royals 2, Athletics 0: Vin Mazzaro pitched six stellar innings and host Kansas City handed Oakland its third shutout in four games. Eric Hosmer homered as the Royals sent the A's to their 10th loss in 11 games.

Marlins 5, Phillies 1: Carlos Zambrano homered and pitched into the eighth inning, and Hanley Ramirez went deep, too, in Philadelphia. Jose Reyes went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Giants 2, Cubs 0: Barry Zito pitched 81/3 scoreless innings for his 150th career win and Joaquin Arias snapped an 18 at-bat hitless stretch with an RBI single for host San Francisco.

Braves 3, Nationals 2: Tommy Hanson shook off an agonizing start to outpitch Gio Gonzalez, and visiting Atlanta ended a six-game skid against its NL East rival.

Astros 5, Reds 3: Jordan Lyles pitched seven strong innings and pinch hitter Justin Maxwell had a two-run homer as host Houston snapped a season-worst eight-game skid.

Rockies 3, Dodgers 2: Alex White gave the overworked Colorado bullpen some much-needed rest, pitching shutout ball into the seventh inning in Denver. The Rockies took two of three from the NL West leaders.

Diamondbacks 6, Padres 0: Trevor Cahill threw a six-hit shutout and Paul Goldschmidt, Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra homered for visiting Arizona.

Pirates 6, Brewers 5: Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones hit consecutive homers and James McDonald struck out eight for visiting Pittsburgh.
