Ian Kennedy pitched eight dominant innings to become the NL's first 20-game winner, Justin Upton hit a broken-bat homer and the host Arizona Diamondbacks moved a step closer to their first NL West title in four years with a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night.

Kennedy (20-4) allowed one hit, walked one and tied his career high with 12 strikeouts.

Upton led off the sixth with his 31st homer off Jeff Karstens (9-9).

Marlins 6, Braves 5: Omar Infante hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off Craig Kimbrel. The Braves' National League wild-card lead over St. Louis fell to 21/2 games.

Mike Stanton hit two solo homers, his 33rd and 34th, for the Marlins.

Cardinals 4, Phillies 3: Kyle Lohse (14-8) outpitched Roy Halladay (18-6) and the Cardinals fended off a rally by host Philadelphia in the ninth. Lance Berkman homered and had an RBI single for the surging Cardinals, who took three of four in the series and have won 10 of their last 12.

Blue Jays 3, Angels 2: Adam Lind drove in the winning run with a grounder in the 10th inning for host Toronto. Two errors led to three unearned runs and extra infielder Torii Hunter couldn't cut down the winning run at the plate.

Mariners, 12, Indians 6: Mike Carp hit a grand slam into the second deck in rightfield and drove in five runs during Seattle's nine-run third inning in a game called by rain after seven innings in Cleveland . . . Former Mets executive Joe McIlvaine, 64, has been hired as a special assistant to Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik. McIlvaine, who was Mets general manager from 1993-97 and was in the organization through the 1980s, has been with the Twins since 1998.-- AP
