Lee's 16 strikeouts not enough for Phils
Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the visiting Braves won their sixth straight game, beating the Phillies, 5-0, Friday night despite Cliff Lee's 16 strikeouts for Philadelphia.
Shane Victorino singled to start the seventh for the first hit off Lowe, and Placido Polanco followed with a double. Lowe then left with an apparent leg or foot injury.
Brian McCann had a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Alex Gonzalez had three hits and an RBI for the Braves.
Lee (2-3) set the major-league high for strikeouts this season, coming within one of the franchise record. The big-league mark for a nine-inning game is 20.
Cardinals 6, Brewers 0: Jaime Garcia carried a perfect game into the eighth inning and finished with a two-hitter, dominating punchless Milwaukee in St. Louis. Garcia (4-0) issued a four-pitch walk to Casey McGehee with one out in the eighth. On the next pitch, Yuniesky Betancourt grounded a solid single to left to end the no-hit bid.
Astros 3, Pirates 2: Wandy Rodriguez (2-3) allowed two runs over seven innings to win his fourth consecutive start against Pittsburgh and Houston scored twice in the eighth to snap a two-game losing streak.
Reds 5, Cubs 4:Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer to lift visiting Cincinnati.
Twins 9, Red Sox 2:Trevor Plouffe hit his first homer of the season and Scott Baker pitched eight strong innings for visiting Minnesota.Rays 6, Orioles 2: James Shields pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning and Brandon Guyer homered in his first big-league at-bat for visiting Tampa Bay.
Blue Jays 7, Tigers 4: Adam Lind homered and drove in two runs and Jesse Litsch struck out a career-high nine for host Toronto. Athletics 3, Royals 2: Gio Gonzalez pitched seven effective innings and visiting Oakland ruined Eric Hosmer's much-anticipated major-league debut. -- AP
