The blood clot in his right calf finally gone, Mariano Rivera is ready to go under the knife.
Speaking to reporters at the Stadium before Wednesday night’s game, Rivera said he would undergo surgery on his right knee on Tuesday. Dr. David Altchek, the Mets’ medical director, will perform the surgery.
Rivera tore his right ACL and sustained damage to his meniscus as well while shagging flies during batting practice May 3 in Kansas City.
The 42-year-old said the following day he’s coming back next season.
“There’s no doubt about that, God willing,” he told reporters.
The surgery would have taken place sooner but the blood clot was discovered during an evaluation.
Experts have said it is highly unlikely — if not impossible — for Rivera to return this season, but the closer wouldn’t rule it out.
“I always believe in miracles,” he said.
