Martin Maldonado, Tyler White each homer to power Houston
Martin Maldonado and Tyler White each homered and had three hits, helping the visiting Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners, 10-7, on Wednesday.
Maldonado had three RBIs and White had two. The Astros led 9-1 before the Mariners got one back in the fifth and added five more in the sixth.
Charlie Morton (13-3) got the win despite allowing six runs before leaving the game with no one out in the sixth.
Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth to earn his 10th save and first as an Astro. The closer was acquired from Toronto last month and joined the team a week later after finishing a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.
Marco Gonzales (12-9) was pitching on eight days of rest but allowed eight runs and 11 hits before leaving with no one out in the fourth. Gonzales has given up 23 earned runs and 38 hits in his last 20 innings.
The Astros took a 2-0 lead in the first with an RBI triple for White before Gonzales’ wild pitch enabled White to score from third. White’s home run came in the ninth.
The big inning for the Astros was the fourth, when they sent 10 to the plate and scored five runs to take an 8-1 lead.
Oakland’s loss to Texas on Wednesday gives the Astros a one-game lead in the AL West.
Nelson Cruz and Mitch Haniger each had home runs for the Mariners. Robinson Cano started at third base, the first time in his 14-year career he has played there. Cano also hit his 525th double, tying him with Ted Williams for 45th of the career list.
Rangers 4, A’s 2: Shin-Soo Choo homered on the first pitch of the game, Joey Gallo added his 33rd homer and Mike Minor pitched six scoreless innings of one-hit ball to win his fourth straight as visiting Texas snapped out of their offensive slump and avoided a series sweep.
Texas was shut out in the first two games of the series and had a 19-inning scoreless streak before Choo’s leadoff homer on the first pitch from Oakland starter Edwin Jackson (4-3) in the first inning.
White Sox 7, Twins 3: Adam Engel broke a tie with a two-run homer in a five-run fifth, and Carlos Rodon (5-3) pitched six strong innings for host Chicago.
The White Sox acquired righthander Felix Paulino from Philadelphia for lefthander Luis Avilan.
Blue Jays 6, Orioles 0: Kendrys Morales homered for the fourth consecutive game, and Thomas Pannone (1-0) and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Jays completed a 10-game season sweep of Baltimore in Toronto.
Blue Jays righthander Aaron Sanchez said that the bruised right index finger that has sidelined him for the past two months happened when his finger got caught in a falling suitcase hours before his June 21 start at the Los Angeles Angels. Sanchez is expected to be activated off the 60-day disabled list Saturday to start against Philadelphia.
Brewers 5, Reds 0: Rookie Freddy Peralta tossed seven scoreless innings and drove in a run with his first career hit, combining with two relievers on a five-hitter for host Milwaukee.
Christian Yelich homered and finished a triple shy of the cycle, reaching base five times and driving in two runs for the Brewers. He opened the first with his 21st homer, doubled in the third, walked in the fourth and singled in the sixth and eighth.
Peralta (6-4) allowed just three singles, striking out seven and walking two to win for the second time in seven starts. The 22-year-old righthander did not allow a hit until Jose Peraza’s single to open the fourth.
Cubs put Russell on DL
Chicago placed infielder Addison Russell on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left middle finger. The Cubs announced the move Wednesday before their game at Detroit. The move is retroactive to Monday.
Chicago also added infielder Daniel Murphy to the 25-man roster. He was acquired Tuesday in a trade with Washington.
