Matteo, Nixon pace Adelphi to baseball sweep
Craig Matteo's single scored Anthony Anzalone (3-for-5) in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Adelphi a 6-5 win in Game 1 of a baseball doubleheader Saturday against UMass-Lowell. Chris Weidlein (2-for-5) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 5 for the Panthers.
In Game 2, Robert Nixon went the distance and allowed eight hits and struck out five and Justin Farnum had two RBIs for Adelphi (21-7, 8-3 Northeast-10) in a 6-3 win. UMass-Lowell is 18-14, 7-8.
NYIT sweeps. Effrey Valdez was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs and Matt McDevitt tossed three innings of scoreless relief as NYIT (9-12, 3-0 Great West) completed a sweep of Chicago State with a 14-8 win. NYIT won the first game, 6-2, as Andrew Guarrasi allowed two hits and struck out 12.
Briarcliffe sweeps Apprentice. Anthony Mele singled in Sam Coglietta with the go-ahead run in the 10th to help Briarcliffe to a 7-5 win in Game 1. Reggie Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. In the second game, a 9-6 win, Briarcliffe scored five runs in the seventh. Eric Wiener tripled home the tying runs, then scored on Kevin Licul's single. Lee Ranta, the program's leader in wins, earned his 22nd. Briarcliffe (15-7, 5-1) entered as the No. 2 team in the USCAA and Apprentice (17-8, 5-2) was No. 1.
SOFTBALL
Hofstra sweeps James Madison. Freshman Olivia Galati allowed five hits and struck out a career-high 17 as Hofstra won the first game, 6-0. Tessa Ziemba and Becca Bigler each had two RBIs. The Pride (26-6, 8-0 CAA) won the second game, 6-3, behind Christie Navatin and Trisha Dreslinski, who each had two RBIs. Erin Wade had four strikeouts in the win.
SUNY-Old Westbury sweeps Purchase. Freshman Alyssa Clancy threw her first career no-hitter with eight strikeouts in leading Old Westbury to a 1-0 win in Game 2. Her RBI-single in the third accounted for the run. Old Westbury won the first game, 10-0, behind Deborah Ciccarelli's four-hitter. Lauren Isaac was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Clancy and Ciccarelli each had two RBIs.
