Alderson's visit completes first round of GM interviews
The Mets completed the first round of interviews for their vacant general manager position Thursday with a visit to Citi Field by Sandy Alderson, who remains a strong favorite for the job. Alderson, 62, is considered a lock to be among the finalists invited back for the second round, which is likely to begin next week, and the team plans to have a new GM in place by the end of the World Series.
Five other candidates interviewed with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and interim GM John Ricco - White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn, Red Sox assistant GM Allard Baird, former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, Dodgers assistant GM Logan White and Blue Jays assistant GM Dana Brown.
Once the finalists are determined, they will interview with principal owner Fred Wilpon and president Saul Katz, indicating the senior Mets officials will have the final say in the decision.
"Each was extremely impressive," Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. "All reiterated their desire and interest in pursuing this opportunity. We will be in direct communication with each as we narrow the candidate pool by early next week. We subsequently will invite the leading candidates back to meet with Fred, Saul and me."
