Bay hurts ribs attempting diving catch
Jason Bay is a little banged up.
The Mets leftfielder bruised his left ribs while making a diving attempt on Gregor Blanco's two-run double just in front of the warning track in the fourth inning of Game 2 Monday night. Bay landed hard after the ball popped out of his glove and appeared to also hit his face on the ground.
He stayed in the game but was removed in the eighth after complaining of soreness. X-rays were negative.
"I came in and they asked if I was all right," Bay said. "I said, 'Yeah, I'm OK.' I think my shoulder's a little sore, but I'm OK. Then I had a couple of at-bats. I got the hit and the next at-bat I walked, and during that at-bat, I felt some discomfort. Nothing like big-time 'Oww.'
"It's at that point that we didn't want to push it."
Bay said he's unsure if he'll play in Tuesday night's series opener against the Marlins.
Extra basesThe Mets placed Ronny Cedeño on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 21 with a strained rib-cage muscle and called up righthander Jeremy Hefner from Triple-A Buffalo. Hefner made his major-league debut in the opener and tossed three innings of scoreless relief. He was optioned back to Buffalo after the game and the Mets recalled infielder Jordany Valdespin. "It was a dream come true," Hefner said . . . Andres Torres (strained left calf) and D.J. Carrasco (right ankle sprain) began their rehab assignments at Class A Port St. Lucie. Torres started in centerfield and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and two steals.
