Bloomberg: I don't want to buy Mets
Add billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the list of wealthy folks who won't be buying a piece of the Mets.
Bloomberg, at an event Thursday at a Harlem middle school with Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, said: "I enjoy baseball and a beer and a box of popcorn. You can rest assured I'm not going to buy a baseball team or have interest in it.''
Bloomberg had kind words for Mets owner Fred Wilpon, who is looking into selling up to 25 percent of the team in the wake of uncertainty surrounding the Bernie Madoff scandal and its effect on the Wilpons' and the Mets' finances.
"I don't know anything about his relationship with Bernie Madoff,'' Bloomberg said. "I can just tell you the Wilpons have been a very generous family. They've supported an awful lot of things in New York City and they're really nice people.''
Bloomberg joins comedian Jerry Seinfeld, former Mets owner Nelson Doubleday and the Dolans - owners of Cablevision, the Knicks, the Rangers and Newsday - among those who have said they are not interested in buying the Mets.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has said he would be interested in buying the team, but only if the Wilpons contact him.
