Less (or more) of Castillo?
King Luis for a night with his walk-off single to beat the Marlins, perhaps we haven't seen the last of Luis Castillo after all.
With Jerry Manuel wanting to win every game he can in a last ditch effort to keep his job, perhaps Castillo gets another chance or two. Ruben Tejada, Castillo's understudy turned starter, is certainly no star. He shows a nice glove, but that does not compensate for a .169 average. The Mets do not have enough hitting to hide a .169 average. Even pitcher R.A. Dickey is higher at . 171.
There's also that matter of $6 million owed to Castillo next season. The Mets have little appetite for eating salaries. Castillo is at .238 but has a lifetime average of .291. On the way to being finished, he may have a few more hits for a team that does not consider itself out of playoff contention. If Castillo has anything near a decent finish, they might be able to unload him or at least find someone willing to pay part of his 2011 salary.
