Castillo ends scoreless duel in a pinch
Alberto Castillo hit a pinch-hit single on a full-count pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Mets a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the season-opener before a crowd of 49,142 at Shea Stadium. Castillo's hit scored Brian McRae to end the longest scoreless opener in National League history after four hours and 35 minutes. The longest Opening Day game in history came in 1926 when the Senators defeated the Philadelphia A's in 15 innings, 1-0.
